New film commission to use SWFTA archive
Peninsula Arts Film Commission 2016
Through internationally renowned exhibitions, film, music, lectures, theatre and dance, Peninsula Arts brings a distinctive cultural voice to the region. Our programme ranges from showcasing highly experimental and challenging art forms, to providing access and insight into the historical developments of culture, with the aim of furthering the understanding and appreciation of the arts.
Plymouth University is one of the principle partners of the Plymouth International History Centre (working title), a major development project in the heart of Plymouth that seeks to transform the existing museum and art gallery on North Hill into a new and unique visitor attraction. The History Centre partnership includes South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA) and the South West Image Bank (SWIB) and is expected to open as the flagship building for the Mayflower 400 commemorations in 2020
The South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA) is the official regional film archive for the South West of England. It is the largest regional film archive in the UK, a member of the UK Film Archive Network (FAUK) and recognised as one of the UK’s most significant screen heritage collections. SWFTA is a partner in the BFI’s Film Audience Network (SW and West Midlands Hub) and is a key partner in the Plymouth History Centre Project, working alongside Plymouth City Council (lead organization), the South West Image Bank (SWiB) and Plymouth University.
The annual Peninsula Arts film commission, launching in 2015, aims to build a body of work that reflects on Plymouth’s film heritage and looks towards its future.
Supporting thepresentationoffilmandcinema
Peninsula Arts runs the Jill Craigie Cinema at Plymouth University, named after Jill Craigie (1914 – 1999) who was the British documentary film director, actor, writer and feminist. Craigie directed The Way We Live (1946) filmed in war-‐damaged Plymouth and which was the first documentary film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. Located in the Roland Levinsky Building, Plymouth University, the cinema, which seats 137, has been designed to a high specification to ensure audiences enjoy film as the film makers intended. Equipped with Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound as well as projectors enabling us to screen 35mm, 16mm formats and DVD/Bluray formats.
Drawing on this association, Peninsula Arts is a passionate advocate for film, recognizing the medium’s ability to entertain and inspire. Past cinema programmes have supported popular, cult classics and artist films, opening up the rich history of cinematography alongside the latest developments within contemporary cinema to a wide range of audiences. It is the supporting organisation for the River Tamar Project, which launched the highly successful It’s All About the River Film Festival in Sept- Oct 2015. We are now looking to offer an annual Jill Craigie New Cinema Commission to support new and emerging filmmakers.
