‘Facing up to the Digital Black Hole’ – Is our screen heritage of the 21st century at risk?

‘Facing up to the Digital Black Hole’ –  the crisis of born digital content for film archives

October 9th saw a live knowledge sharing presentation as an evaluation report for the contemporary collecting project ‘Screen Time : Bradford’ which ran May 2025- May 2026. Co-Director of YFA & NEFA and Project Lead of Screen Time: Bradford, Graham Relton posed the question “can we actively collect and preserve analogue and born digital content?” – a subject which is part of an ongoing debate within FAUK regarding Contemporary Collecting as part of the National Strategy.

Screen Time: Bradford, which ran between May 2025 and May 2026, was a contemporary collecting project designed to create a moving image legacy for the Bradford district. It was made possible thanks to the BFI National Lottery Screen Heritage Fund, awarding National Lottery Good Cause funding.

The project was timed to coincide with Bradford UK City of Culture 2025. This year of celebration and creativity provided a significant opportunity for us to launch our first focused Contemporary Collecting campaign.
